Devi Group

Chinmaya Devi Group is the all women wing of Chinmaya Mission.

Aim: Know, Grow and be Empowered

The objective of the Devi Group is to impart spiritual knowledge thus empowering women to disseminate the knowledge gathered to their family. Devi Group training enables women to equip themselves with the wherewithal to promote tradition with wisdom and understanding. They play an important role in raising the cultural standard in pockets of society becoming catalysts for family, community and societal transformation.

“When a mother is a true seeker, the whole environment of the house changes. Your family does not have to go out to hear a swami. You change, and your environment will follow suit. You are the mother, the model, the Guru.”
- Swami Chinmayananda

How does this happen?

Once a week, women in a particular locality get together in a common place/home for an hour and a half.

A typical class structure would be learning

  • Chanting of slokas with meaning
  • Bhajans
  • Study of Scriptural texts such as Bhaja Govindam, Bhagavad Geeta, Tatva Bodh, Vishnusahasranamam…
  • Why do we in Hindu Culture and God Symbolism
  • Puja Vidhi

Apart from this, participation in activities such as,

  • Temple visits as a group
  • Celebration of festivals, especially Navaratri
  • Rendering Bhajans at yajnas held by Chinmaya Mission
  • Volunteering in Chinmaya Mission Temples and other projects
  • Special projects of Chinmaya Mission

The Devi Group format allows members to feel comfortable in the all-women setting where they are freely able to discuss their doubts, fears and problems without fear of disapproval or censure.

Do you want to answer your children if they ask questions like,

Why should I touch the feet of elders in the family? Why should I pray? What is the symbolism behind Lord Ganesha having an elephant face? What is the message of Lord Krishna to Arjuna in the Bhagavad Geeta? What are the steps in doing Puja, what do they mean? How does chanting slokas help? And many such questions.

Join Chinmaya Devi Group and be empowered.

How do I join Chinmaya Devi Group?

A short note on Devi group participation in the year April to March 2020 :

Bhajan for Geeta Jnana Yajna: On the occasion of Geeta Jnana Yajna by Swami Ramakrishnananda in April and December, Devi groups participated by singing Bhajans as a prelude to the programs. The rehearsals and the performance was a very fulfilling exposure for the members

Guru Paaduka Pooja and Guru Aaradhana Celebrations: In August, members from across Devi groups participated in the Guru paaduka Pooja and Guru Aaradhana celebrations of our revered Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda. The members also chanted many slokas and bhajans with devotion and respect.

Pujya Guruji Swami Tejomayanandji’s visit: This was the focal point of first term of the year. All the Devi groups joined together for a satsang with Swami Tejomayanandji during his visit to Chennai. The special meeting with Pujya Guruji boosted the spirits of the members. Devi group members also supported Chinmaya Vani by volunteering at the book stalls.

Temple Visit: The combined Devi groups of Ayanavaram, Kilpauk visited Athivaradar temple at Kanchipuram. It was a real experience indeed for the members. The Devi group members also visited Tirumala Tirupati temple as part of the temple visit program of the year

Navaratri Pooja celebrations: Navaratri is the most enjoyed festival of women at a personal level. During Navaratri, each day one Devi group came to Heritage centre to participate in the Pooja and chant Sri Lalitha Sahasranamam and Devi slokas and Kirtis. This is a much enjoyed participation of the Devi group year after year.

Ayanavaram (Sunnyvale) Devi group members chanted Sri Lalitha Sahasranamam twice every day by visiting each members’ residence.

Book fair: The Devi group members also participated in manning the book stall during Chennai Book fair. Additionally the Devi group members also manned the book stall and information stalls during many mission programs in this year.

Jivotsav ’2020: Chinmaya Devi Group organised JIVOTSAV 2020, an all women spiritual program.
